Plastic Bag-Free Chepstow

Working with Monmouthshire Community Recycling and Keep Wales Tidy, Transition Chepstow produced an environmentally friendly Chepstow shopping bag as an alternative to plastic bags given out by retailers. It is made of fairtrade, organic cotton and features a design by local artist Susie Grindey.

Plastic Facts

  • UK supermarkets hand out over 17 billion plastic bags a year.
  • Plastic bags can take 1,000 years to break down.
  • Nearly 90 per cent of floating marine litter is plastic.
As well as promoting the town, the Chepstow bag also reduces the number of plastic bags that end up killing marine-life, as litter defacing our streets and open spaces or in landfill. They also help local traders cut their operating costs by reducing the number of carrier bags they hand out. For example, Artists’ Corner report they have not reordered carrier bags since October 2007 as more and more customers shop with a reusable bag.

A growing number of local retailers have joined the initiative, pledging to reduce their use of plastic carrier bags and distibuting My Chepstow Bags instead. Look for the “We Support Plastic Bag Free Chepstow” window stickers when shopping in Chepstow. These stickers were funded by Rural Community Action.
