Pembroke Primary School Bike Club

As Pembroke Primary School’s 6 week pilot after school Bike Club was so successful, We decided to apply for a grant from ‘Bike Club’ to develop our project further. (Official sponsors of ‘Bike Club’ are CTC, UK YOUTH, ContinYou and Youth Scotland).

Our application was successful and we have been awarded a grant of £2468.94. With this money we have planned training for the volunteer supporters of the Bike Club (Ride leader and Ride Manager courses, Youth Achievement Awards, Bike Maintenance and National Standards Cycle Training). We are also buying a tool kit and work stand to repair and maintain the club members bikes and also teach young people how to do this themselves.

Bike Club will run all year. We started this week with over 60 enthusiastic children and some very supportive parent volunteers. We have a fun, packed activity schedule some of which will include fund raising rides to buy new bike stands as the current ones are constantly overflowing and to learn about cycling as a sustainable method of transport.

Bike Club Initiator, Jayne Worrin met with year 6 members of Bike Club to introduce The Youth Achievement Awards with a view to them participating whilst they are at Bike Club. Youth Achievement Awards are a national award scheme for children and young adults. It has been developed by UK Youth, the leading national youth charity and ASDAN, a QCA recognised awarding Body and educational charity.
All of the Awards use a peer education approach to helping children and young people plan and review the learning gained in an almost limitless range of activities that interest and motivate them.

As Pembroke Primary School Bike Club has been so successful they have been asked to represent Wales in the Primary School category at the Achievement Awards at LLandaff Cathedral on November 16th 2011.
The children have also been asked to speak with HRH Princess Anne about their experiences at Bike Club.

Sarah at 559 Bikes is coming up to Pembroke to help us design a small off road bike skills track.
We are accepting donations of childrens’ and adult bikes that are in repairable condition. These will be for our newly qualified mechanics to practice on and then to loan to club members who may not have a bike themselves.Six people have made themselves available for the maintenance course.
There is potential for bikes taken to the Five Lanes Civic Amenity Site to be used by the Bike Club to practice bicycle maintenance on. There is a similar project at Monmouth Comprehensive.
