Climate change affects us all – we must act now to ensure a sustainable future.
In the run-up to the COP26 conference in Glasgow in November, Transition Chepstow is launching a competition for schools and youth groups in the local area.
You can enter as an individual or as a team in one of three age groups:
You are asked to prepare materials for a campaign to make everyone, but especially young people aware of the need to reduce our carbon footprint and to inspire others to do the same.
You can use any media, including written material, photographs, visual art, performance art, music, audio, or video. You must include a short outline of how the materials can be used to reach different audiences.
Enter through your school or youth group, cash prizes of up to £100 to winning organisations in each of the three age categories. The best entries will be used in future campaigns and some of the winners may receive professional help to finalise their campaign.
Entries must be submitted by 5pm on Friday, 1st October 2021.

Readers of the recently published Chepstow Transport Study commissioned by Monmouthshire County Council and the traffic consultants Arup, may be surprised there is no mention of the essential short-term road improvements proposed for the notorious bottle-neck high beech roundabout road junctions. This is despite the vigorous Congestion Free Chepstow campaign by Transition Chepstow and allied drivers’ vocal pressure as strongly expressed at the two previous packed public meetings held on this controversial issue. The South Wales Trunk Road Agent has currently completed only half of the necessary access road improvements required, namely the A48 westwards and Fairview junctions. The two remaining HBR main access roads, namely the A48 eastwards from Pwllmeyric and the A466 southwards from Monmouth, still await to be similarly improved by the implementation of the requisite dual white line lane markings. Road modifications essential to enhance traffic flow, to promote road safety and to mitigate the adverse health effects of air pollution.
The already existing dual alignment of vehicles approaching the HBR access road junctions is evidently illustrative of the available required road width space. This situation has been confirmed by the detailed precise kerb measurements undertaken by the Transition Chepstow Transport Group.
In subsequent recent direct discussions with Welsh Government officials, TCTG members expressed their dissatisfaction with the partial and inconsistent implementation of the HBR road markings improvements. Specifically, the misuse of inappropriate traffic models and out of date 2016 data of dubious current validity, was critically questioned. However, the WG officials have indicated that consideration of related planned measures separate from the ARUP proposals, are being reviewed with potential progress expected in early 2021.
Any further impetus to complete the urgent particular HBR traffic improvement project will be reliant upon the determined efforts of Chepstow road users to ensure that their views are clearly expressed.
The essential additional publicity provided by the use of social media and the local press, is a vital means to ensure the urgent success of the ongoing Transition Chepstow campaign efforts to provide an improved and sustainable transport system and infrastructure in Chepstow.
The Welsh Government has commended the exemplar community initiatives and actions of Transition Chepstow in galvanising local support, and for their positive liaison with local, Welsh and UK Governments to achieve positive change.
